Who goes to see an osteopath and what to expect
Who goes to see an osteopath and what to expect
People come to osteopaths for a wide range of problems, much more than just backache and joint pain. Symptoms can be very acute and sudden or chronic long-term, it could be an ache, pain or other discomfort or more a question of feeling well enough to enjoy life and doing the things you want to do.

Here are some of the reasons why people seek osteopathic help:
  • They have been recommended by others who have found osteopathy helpful
  • They have been referred by their doctor, dentist, podiatrist, midwife or other healthcare professional.
  • They are looking for a natural way to get better.
  • They don’t want to avoid taking medication.
  • Their doctor, dentist, specialist or other healthcare professional has not been able to help

Babies & Children
Babies & Children
Osteopaths are trained to assess people of all ages including infants and children.
Osteopathic care using the cranial approach is very gentle and safe for babies and children, even those born prematurely. Osteopaths trained in the treatment of children are experienced in working even with the child who will not want to lie down or is very agitated.
Osteopathy treats the person rather than the condition, so whatever the age of the patient osteopathy works with the self-maintaining potential of the living system.
Low back pain, pelvic girdle and pubic symphysis pain
Benefits of Osteopathy During Pregnancy
Osteopathic treatment while pregnant can ease some of the symptoms typically associated with pregnancy including:
  • Aches and pains (back pain, neck and shoulder pain, muscular tension)
  • Low back pain, pelvic girdle and pubic symphysis pain
  •  Nausea and vomiting
  •  Heartburn
  • Sciatica
What to expect at your first appointment
I will ask about symptoms, medical history, past injuries, lifestyle, work, and emotional health. I will then examine the body framework (be prepared to undress to your underwear), tell you what I think is going on and what we can do about it. Treatment may then include soft tissue massage, joint stretches and articulation and in some cases joint manipulation. These techniques help to correctly align the body, release tight muscles, improve blood flow, maintain flexibility and improve posture and strength.
The first appointment takes around one hour and subsequent appointments take half an hour. Most problems resolve between 2 and 6 treatments, but the longer you have had a problem, the longer it might take to resolve.
